Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 2 cups soft breadcrumbs
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp. ground cloves
  • 4 cups thinly sliced, peeled tart cooking apples (about 1 1/2 lb.)
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract

  1. Preheat oven to 325°F. Coat a 2-quart square baking dish with nonstick cooking spray; set aside.
  2. In a medium skillet melt butter over medium-low heat. Add breadcrumbs; cook and stir 4 to 5 minutes or until breadcrumbs are lightly browned. Remove from heat; set aside.
  3. In a large bowl combine sugar, cinnamon and cloves. Add apple slices and vanilla; toss gently until coated. Layer half each of the apples and toasted breadcrumbs in prepared baking dish. Repeat layers, ending with breadcrumbs.
  4. Cover and bake 35 minutes. Uncover and bake 10 minutes more or until bubbly and apples are tender. Let stand 10 minutes before serving.
