Ingredients

  • 1 (24-oz.) round loaf Italian bread
  • 1/2 (8-oz.) tub whipped cream cheese, softened
  • 1 lb. lean ground beef
  • 1 (1.25-oz.) pkg. taco seasoning
  • 4 slices American cheese, cut into strips
  • 1 cup shredded lettuce
  • 1 large tomato, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup bottled salsa

  1. Meanwhile, cut bread loaf in half horizontally. Hollow out top and bottom of bread loaf, leaving a 1/2-inch shell (reserve removed bread for another use). Spread cut sides with cream cheese; set aside.
  2. In a large skillet cook and stir ground beef over medium-high heat until browned. Drain fat. Add taco seasoning and 3/4 cup water. Bring to boiling; reduce heat. Simmer, uncovered, 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  3. Transfer beef mixture to bread shell. Layer with cheese, lettuce and tomato. Cover with bread top, cut side down. Cut into wedges; serve with salsa.
