Attacking childhood hunger with Kids' Food Basket

If there’s one thing that’s important to us at SpartanNash, it’s full bellies. And this is especially important when it comes to young kids that need good nutrition to grow up into the amazing adults we know they’re destined to be. So that’s why in honor of #GivingTuesday this year, the Tuesday after Black Friday and Cyber Monday are done that is focused on charitable giving, we partnered with the West Michigan based local nonprofit organization, Kids’ Food Basket.

Kids’ Food Basket’s mission is to attack childhood hunger. Beginning over a decade ago, Kids’ Food Basket serves 125 kids each school day through their Sack Supper program. Sack Suppers are evening meals that are well-rounded and nutritious to help with the development of kids’ brains and bodies. Through the help of donations and volunteers, they are able to serve nearly 7,500 kids each weekday.

So to help them with their insanely worthy mission, SpartanNash looked at their current wish list – filled with items such as toasted oats cereal, sandwich bags, pretzels, applesauce cups, and more (see full list here) and sent out our new Fast Lane delivery van over with a $500 order comprised of all of these great items from a few of our local stores.

And we didn’t stop there. Not only can you donate items, but Kids’ Food Basket also uses 250 volunteers every day to assemble their sack suppers. You can choose to volunteer in Grand Rapids, Muskegon, or Holland, and it is open to those as young as five years old! So on top of our donation, we also sent a small team of employees to Kids’ Food Basket’s current headquarters to volunteer. Armed with hair nets, gloves, and willing hearts, we spent an hour sorting, cleaning, and filling sandwich bags with farm fresh green beans – one of the five food groups present in every sack supper.

When our volunteer shift ended, we left feeling profoundly thankful for the work that Kids’ Food Basket does in our local communities, and to have the opportunity ourselves to help them achieve their mission. Proper nutrition is so vital for our youth to be able to grow and live well, and those sack suppers make a big impact on not only the bellies but the development of these young children. That impact is what makes #GivingTuesday such a powerful movement – people all around the world uniting to turn good intentions into actions.  We were proud to partner with Kids’ Food Basket for our #GivingTuesday campaign, and remain excited for future opportunities!
